Perfume
Perfume is a Japanese girl group specializing in pop techno music, hailing from Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The trio comprises Ayano Omoto ("Nocchi"), Yuka Kashino ("KASHIYUKA"), and Ayaka Nishiwaki ("a-chan"), and they have been associated with Amuse, Inc. since 2003 and Universal Music Group since 2012.
The group originated in the early 2000s within the Young Talent Academy Actor's School Hiroshima and launched their first local single "Omajinai Perori" on March 21, 2002, before shifting to Tokyo a year later. They began collaborating with producer Yasutaka Nakata of Capsule and released their first nationwide indie single, "Sweet Donuts," on August 6, 2003. Their major breakthrough came in 2005 when they signed a contract with Tokuma Japan Communications, unveiling their major debut single "Linear Motor Girl" on September 21.
In 2008, Perfume gained substantial attention in Japan when their seventh single "Polyrhythm" was chosen as NHK's recycling campaign theme song. This marked their first Top 10 single on the Oricon charts, leading to subsequent Top 5 hits starting with "Baby Cruising Love," their eighth single.
Their original studio album "Game," launched on April 16, 2008, became their maiden chart-topper in Japan, while "Love the World" emerged as their debut number one single on July 9, 2008. With combined single and album sales exceeding 5 million, Perfume ranks among Japan's most successful musical acts.
Initially recognized for their post-Shibuya-kei sound, Perfume evolved towards contemporary electronic dance music incorporating elements from various genres like synthpop, bubblegum pop, dance-pop, techno, and house music. The group is notable for their digitally altered vocals, employing techniques such as autotune, Harmony Engine, and vocoders.
In 2012, Perfume revealed their global deal with Universal Music Group, signaling intentions to expand their international presence. Their single "Spending All My Time" (2012) was seen as a nod to their overseas fanbase. Subsequent albums like "Cosmic Explorer" (2016) and "Future Pop" (2018) solidified their status as leading figures in Asian pop music.
