Artist Information
Hikaru Utada
Hikaru Utada, also known simply as Utada, is a Japanese singer, songwriter, and producer born on January 19, 1983. She holds significant influence in Japan's music industry and is widely recognized as one of its best-selling artists.
Born in the United States to Japanese parents Keiko Fuji, an enka singer, and Teruzane Utada, a record producer, Utada developed a passion for music early in life. Her frequent travels to Tokyo due to her father's work played a role in her musical journey. Utada's career took off after signing with Toshiba-EMI. She released her first English-language album "Precious as Cubic U" under the alias Cubic U in 1998, which unfortunately did not gain commercial success. However, her debut Japanese-language album "First Love," released the following year and characterized by R&B and dance-pop influences, became an instant hit. Bolstered by hit singles like "Automatic," "Time Will Tell," and "Movin' On Without You," the album sold a staggering two million copies in its debut week in Japan, ultimately becoming the country's best-selling album with over six million copies sold in 1999 alone.
Utada's subsequent album "Distance," released in early 2001, produced major hits like "Addicted to You," "Wait & See (Risk)," and "Can You Keep a Secret?," each selling over a million copies. "Distance" also set sales records, selling three million copies within its first week and becoming Japan's fastest-selling album at the time. Her 2002 release "Deep River," featuring chart-toppers such as "Traveling," "Hikari," and "Sakura Drops," solidified her status as one of Japan's top-selling artists. Throughout her career, albums like "Exodus," "Ultra Blue," and "Heart Station" continued to achieve millions in sales. After a break, Utada returned with acoustic-driven albums like "Fantôme" (2016) and "Hatsukoi" (2018), both reaching number one on Oricon charts. Her latest success includes the 2022 album "Bad Mode," her first Japanese/English album.
Utada's impact on Japanese music is profound; she's recognized as one of the most influential artists of the 2000s, with over 40 million records sold. Her singles frequently top the Oricon Charts, and her albums like "First Love," "Distance," and "Deep River" are among Japan's best-selling records. Internationally, Utada gained recognition for her contributions to the "Kingdom Hearts" video game series, producing theme songs like "Simple and Clean," "Sanctuary," "Don't Think Twice," and "Face My Fears." In 2021, Utada openly identified as non-binary, making a significant impact beyond music as well.
